What is Phoenix?How to ConnectQuestsMaps

Logging on to Phoenix for the first time can be a little confusing. What follows is a short guide, showing you what you will see, and what to do when you see it, to hopefully make this experience as easy as possible.

Introduction

The first step it to actually connect to Phoenix. You have several options here; you can use straight-forward telnet, a MUD client, or our Java client. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Plain telnet often does not support color and is cumbersome to use. A MUD client offers a wide (often confusing) range of features, but requires you to download it first, and you may even have to pay for the privelidge. Our Java client does support color, but does not offer the depth of functionality that a more experienced MUDder would like. For the sake of simplicity, this tutorial will deal only with our Java client, however the method is much the same for all clients.

Step 1: Getting Connected

Click on the link, "Connect via Java" on the front page to open the Java client, or click here to open it in a new window. The client will download briefly to your computer, and then connect automatically. The first thing you will see looks something like this:

It is a spring day in the land of Phoenix.
Game Time Elapsed: 1 hour, 19 minutes, 6 seconds

This is fairly self-explanitory! It simply tells you the in-game time of day and year, followed by the time elapsed since the last "reset". You can find out more about this by typing INFO RESET after you have logged in.

Step 2: Choosing a Name

The next thing you see will be:

By what name shall I call you?

Here, you should enter the name you wish to be known by, followed by the enter key. If the name you choose is already taken, it will ask you for a password. Simply press enter again to decline and you will be asked for another name. When you find a name that is not taken, you will be asked to confirm what you have entered:

Did I get the name right, <your name>?

If you made a mistake, enter "N" for no. To confirm, simply enter "Y" for yes. The game will then inform you that your new character is being created.

Step 3: Choosing a Password

Next, you will be asked to make up a password. This can be anything you like, but should not be the same as the name of your character, or any other common word.

Password:

To make sure you typed it in correctly, you will be then asked to re-enter the same password again:

Please retype the password for confirmation:

Step 4: Can You See Color?

The next question:

Does your terminal support ANSI color?

...may sound a little confusing. If you are using the Java client, the answer is yes (so enter "Y"), however if you are using Windows Telnet, the answer is no (enter "N"). If you are unsure if your client supports color, just pick yes.

Step 5: Choosing a Guild

Next, you will be presented with the following menu:

Guild selection choices:
Mage : Excellent magic, poor fighter.
Jack : Average magic, average fighter.
Warrior : No magic, excellent fighter.
Thief : No magic, good fighter, unique skills.
Druid : Very good magic, fair fighter.
Necromancer : Good magic, fair fighter, unique spells.

(You may switch guilds later if desired)
Your guild: M, J, W, T, D or N?

Simply enter the letter indicated of the guild of your choice. Don't worry too much about your selection here, as you can change your mind later should you wish.

Step 6: Choosing a Sex

Finally, you will be asked what sex you would like to make your new character. Your options are male, female and neuter (sexless). To pick one, just enter the first letter of your choice.

Sex (M/F/N) : >

Step 7: You're In!

Congratulations, you are logged on to Phoenix!

The first thing you will see will be the message of the day. When you have read it, just press the enter key. You will then be placed in the Welcome Center, which will help teach you more about the game. Read the text that comes up on your screen and follow the instructions.
